How does acupuncture help treat infertility?
Acupuncture has the following potential fertility-boosting benefits:

• Increase blood flow to the uterus, improving chances of implantation
• Regulate and balance hormone, lower evaluated FSH

• Regulate estrogen and progesterone level to thicken the uterine lining
• Prevent uterine contraction and improve implantation
• Help respond better to medication

How long will it take to get pregnant?

It will depend on each single individual case. If you are trying naturally, you need a minimum of 3 cycles of treatment with most couples conceiving between 3 to 6 cycles. However, if you are using acupuncture with Assisted Reproductive Therapy - ART (IVF/IUI), the treatment period will vary depending on the success of the procedure. Most of our patients are able to get pregnant in their first trial combing with our acupuncture service.

Is acupuncture treatment different depending on the time of the cycle?

The acupuncture treatment is often slightly modified in order to produce more specific effects depending on the timing of the cycle. For example, one specific acupuncture treatment may be used after ovulation to maintain a low stress level and to support embryo implantation. Another treatment may be used before ovulation to promote timely ovulation and improve the quality of the egg.

Can acupuncture cause any side effects on my fertility treatment?

Acupuncture has been used to help infertility patients for a long history, and has been using to help IVF/IUI in millions of patients at thousands of hospitals worldwide, it is very safe and hasn’t found any side effect in combing with fertility treatment. If you are going to an experienced licensed acupuncturist who has experience in treating infertility, it must be very safe.

Does acupuncture correct high FSH / hormonal imbalance?

An increasing number of women are visiting acupuncture clinics seeking help in correcting the hormone imbalances (FSH, LH, progesterone, prolactin, etc.).
Acupuncture treatments can be very helpful in regulating hormonal imbalances through influencing the hormonal regulation centers in the brain and autonomic nervous system (i.e., the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis).

Where are you going to insert the needles?

The location of acupuncture points will vary from patient to patient and from treatment to treatment. Some of the most well-known acupuncture points, traditionally used to influence the function of the female reproductive organs, are located on lower abdomen, and legs. The points on head, neck and arms are used in order to stimulate autonomic nervous system and further induce the relaxation response.

Should my husband be treated too?

It is estimated that men are responsible for up to 50% of infertility among couples. If your husband has low sperm count, motility, or low morphology, acupuncture / herbal medicine can help to improve his sperm quality.

Can moxibustion turn breech baby?

Moxibustion has been found to be effective in stimulating fetal movement and in correcting breech presentation. In November 1998, Journal of America Medical Association (JAMA) published a paper about using moxibustion to turn 130 breech babies. Moxibustion involves burning a herb called Moxa close to the skin at specific points known. It can be used from 32-39 weeks’ pregnancy.

When should I start acupuncture for my IVF?

It will depend on each individual case. For example, if the patient has high FSH or poor ovarian reserve, we need to start acupuncture at least 1-2 months before the IVF cycle to prepare the body. If patient has tried and failed 1-2 cycles of IVF, we also recommend to start acupuncture 1-2 months before the new cycle.
